One day in the evening, Bhoke was outside their house sweeping the ground while singing one of her favorite songs. She didn’t know that the day had reached to make her a real woman by circumcising her as the customs and traditions of the Mahema village during the harvesting seasons.
She continued sweeping, Later her mother arrived with a crew of women dancing hardly. Bhoke’s mother welcomed the crew at home and introduced them to the family. When she was doing all this Bhoke was behind the house hearing each and everything being said. Being informed of how circumcision was she ran away to escape from the misery. As the mother came out to look for her so that they can start the program, Bhoke was seen crossing the Banana plantation running. Her mother ordered strong boys in the Mahema village to chase and bring her back before it became a shame to her. The boys caught her and brought her back. Her mother slapped her on the chick and took her to the congregation of circumcisers. When Bhoke entered all the women inside danced happily as Bhoke was quietly glancing down fearfully thinking of how her clitoris going to be cut and removed away. The women continued dancing till when the old woman raised her voice saying it was enough. She took her blunt blade and ordered the assistant woman to hold Bhoke in the upright position. Ngariba kneeled in front of Bhoke, she removed the skirt and pants. Everyone was quite looking attentively what was taking place, the Ngariba took her blunt blade and cut Bhoke’s clitoris. Bhoke shouted with pain when the woman closed her mouth to prevent the noise from spreading away.
As the ceremony progressed, the policemen arrived with two women who introduced themselves as officers from the Tanzania Gender Networking Program (TGNP) and Tanzania Women Lawyers Association (TAWLA). The group of women who gathered at the ceremony together with Bhoke’s parents remained speechless for a while witnessing their joyful moment turning into a misfortune. The policemen arrested them all and after some days, they stood before the court of law to be answerable. The two women took Bhoke to the hospital for medication till when she retained back her healthy from the wounded scars and after a time she was taken to school till when she completed her education.
