βFrom this day hence shall I call you daughter nor you I mother no moreβ The water pot fell from the old woman Agata as she tore her blouse to expose her chest. βThese breasts did not suckle an unfilial seed.β Said Agata, lifting her breasts to the heavens. Hope Acaki stood speechless as she looked at her friend Suzie, numb to the weight of the pot that sat on her newly plaited head; newly estranged to a motherβs love.
*
Hope had washed the previous nightβs dirty utensils; she was halfway done sweeping by dayβs break. She swept with such lifelessness that worried Mzee Gudut, who instead of milking had resorted to watching. Cherowinya had just emerged from the main hut; a bowl of groundnuts on one hand, goatskin on the other. Her waist girded with a traditional kitenge.
βCome sit with meβ Cherowinya tapped on the goatskin. βYour older sister will finish the sweeping.β
βYou have accomplished so much this early morning. It gladdens my heart.β
βI did not have much sleepβ Hope popped her knuckles as she sat.
βIβm aging, minute features skip me. Do tell, what it is that troubles you!β
βMother, will you disown me if I canβt stand the knife?β
βIβm confident you can. All your sisters went through harmlessly. School kept you away for too long.β
βMust I be cut, mother?β
βYes child, this is the season. You know how it is with our people. A girl is ten times more valuable, desirable and respected in the aftermath. Youβve seen the men who flock your fatherβs compound asking for your older sistersβ hands; had it not been for university, your fatherβs kraal would be full.β
βAcross the well, another young girl has died. Mzee Kiropatβs daughter can hold her urine no more. Sagal, my childhood friend remained incognizant for several hours days ago and now walks as though a log sits between her legs. All these after being cut. Mother, Iβm scaredβ
βI know child, I was too. A decade ago, it was non-negotiable; it was and still is a guarantee of fidelity. Rebels were ostracized.β
βA decade ago, no one was ever liable on conviction to imprisonment. I will be married off mother, my education will be my value and bring more wealth than any woman of the knife ever has.β
βIs that so?β
βIβm afraid so.β
βTill then.β
βYes mother.β
Wonderful story, am longing for more.
400 words could only allow so much
Great piece bro

Great piece, good encouragement to our sisters to stand against fgm, especially with such reasonable discussion. Thanks @ Fred Sunday Mugisha for the write-up.
Thanks Brian, it is now upon all of us as stakeholders to put an end to this harmful cultural practice.

Thanks Emmanuel, Iβm glad that you agree. This bargain can only come through educating the girl child. An all round education.

End Female Genital Mutilation!
Thank you Fred for the write up. You are such an amazing leaderπ
Thank you Akampa for joining the fight to end FGM. It must end now! The silence is deafening.
This is an amazing piece, Freddie. Hope’s ability to negotiate with her mother in order to avoid being cut and her mother being sensitive, is a new dawn that we need to experience. Kudos!
Thank you Geoffrey for paying attention to the cries in the diction. There is HOPE for us through education.
Wow Fred, what an amazing read it was! Keep up the great work!
Thanks Liz for the kind words
Thanks for this wonderful piece my brother.
I’m glad you think so
This is a transformational story. Thank you for using it to connect us and highlight the plight of FGM. Well done Fred
Thanks Ms Noreen. We are all perfect in God’s image anyways, why take a piece to please customs?
Put an END to FGM period. embrace a new world where cruel social practices don’t have to stand in the way of invaluable choices.. she chooses education, wow and what a brave woman. “I will be married off mother, my education will be my value and bring more wealth than any woman of the knife ever has.β A great story Fred, keep writing.
Thank you Catherine. We must put an end to FGM. With this zeal, we surely can put this menace behind us as we look towards the yellow sun of hope for a brighter future where FGM is nothing but a ‘once upon a time….’
Great one Fred. This gives hope to those who are slaves to barbaric cultures. We must stand firm in stopping barbaric cultures that are unhealthy and undermine the dignity of men and women. Inspire more people with your writing Fred, so proud of you.
Thank you Mr Denis for joining the fight end FGM. Gratitude, on behalf of all humans.
A practice that estranges a daughter to a mother’s love, excludes her from enjoying the rights and dignity of a human being should be peeled off from our society. All the Agatas need to be educated!
Indeed Mr Geoffrey, all the Agatas who put tradition before an individual’s life must be educated. This practice must be PEELED off. Thanks for such strong words.
I am very happy to see this. Though it is our culture however there are some other cultural practices we should not accept at all. Fred your article is very interesting infact it was overdue, it should have come long time ago. Bogus culture of inflicting pain and surfering to our girls. Keep up the fight.
You wrote my thoughts exactly…..
Thanks Emmanuel, I’m glad that you agree. This bargain can only come through educating the girl child. An all round education.
It is inhuman to deprive someone’s genitals unwillingly. I condemn the act.
Thanks Fred for increasing awareness.
Let’s end FGM. thank you for speaking out.
Great masterpiece education can bring more wealth than what the knife can waiting for the next chapter.
Indeed. Education can bring much more than just wealth.
The trauma the little girl Hope had after witnessing her friend disowned is what every girl in a FGM practicing communities goes through. I’m glad she was up all night contemplating on the matter that changed how her story could have ended. An amazing work here. Please expand this story.
it is sad that a girl must go through this.
This is awesome! Let’s kick FGM out of Africa through empowering the girls with education.
And so be it.
Yes Estee. Let’s kick FGM out of Africa.
Fred, thanks for your contribution towards ending FGM. Keep it up!
Thank you too for responding to the invitation to end the practice.
Thanks Stephen. Keep it up too.
This is a nice piece Fred..work that promotes dignity, peace and freedom .FGM has been a problem for centuries and am glad this is the generation where we say it has to stop ,thank you for wanting to protect the girls by sharing a story where everyone can experience what exactly happens.Great work.
This could be a stepping stone to humanity # To End such painful oppressions#.
It’s a great piece of it’s kind… Fredπͺ
Would love to read more.
Great piece! My attention to this FGM issue is drawn closer than before. We surely need to end this at once! So help us God!
This is a great write up as we protect a girl child .This practice should be peeled off .
Fgm actually in our culture it’s ataboo so lcondem it
Great write up Fred. We need to stand together to end such barbaric acts in our society
Its a good piece brother and ideally FGM should not be one of the requirements for finding a good marriage partner in this new error.
A woman’s smile is a blossoming flower in every home. ,Thank you Fred for this cause. The world needs many of like you,, let’s end FGM.
The (elderly) ladies in these communities need to be educated of the dangers of FGM as they are the ones usually “upholding the culture”. Thanks Fred for the initiative.
πππ
Great write up, keep moving forward bro.
What a powerful STORY! Voice of the voiceless in a very deep short story. We need more young people to write with such strength portrayed in “A New Dawn For Bargain” because you own the world now, and we look up to you. At my 55 years of age, my hope is in you Mugisha to put a strong fight to end such cruel cultural practices.
Mother’s can mean to be cruel in the name of God knows what practice. Let’s end fgm already.
End FGM. A girl is as valuable as she naturally came. Why mutilate?
Fgm gone wrong is very expensive to national governments according to a report. It is not only barbaric but expensive.
I’m impressed by the education the girl exhibited. You’re gifted snd creative.
Nice write up. Kudos.
