She easedropped and become anxious about what it was all about and was eager to find out more about it. The next morning she approached one of the her friends Mary and asked her about what she had overheard them talking about concerning genital mutilation the previous day.
Mary told her about all the benefits and that traditionally a girl had to have her labias mutilated into order for her to be called of age and without doing so one could not get married, she went on to tell her that if she wanted to know more there was a woman who perfomed the proedure and lived by a nearby village. That very afternoon they went to visit the woman who lived in a small grass-thatched house which smoke coming out of the roof. The lady welcomed them with a smile and asked the girls to enter the house. Mary introduced Jane to the woman and the purpose of their visit, the woman was delighted and explained more about the procedure adding that she would bleed for a short time and it would be painful. Jane agreed for it to be done.
The woman got a small knife which she had put on the fire and cut Jane’s labias and it was painful but she endured throughout the process. The woman told Jane not to worry about the bleeding and gave her some herbs in a cup to drink for the pain to go away. The girls thanked the lady and went back their dormitories to retire for the night. At around mid-night Jane woke up feeling weak and only to noticed that her clothes and beddings were soaked in blood, she tried to stand but fell to the ground and attempted to crawl to Mary’s bed but could not manage. She then decided to call ot to her friend but passed out immediately after, Mary woke up and quickly alerted others to help her carry Jane and alert the matron as she was uncounsious.
