In an isolated community, miles away from the city where folks before the cock crow are already preparing their tools for the days business(dominantly farming).
Mabel, going about the morning house chores was interrupted by her mother’s voice, calling her name from the other end of the compound. She rushes to meet her and it turned out that her long expected fear, has finally located her abode.
You see in this community, when a young girl has approached the age of marriage, it is expected that the older women carry out a right which involves the mutilation of the female genital. And it is believed that without carrying out such rights, the young lady might be barren all her life.
Mabel being aware of the tradition however, vowed to use all means to avoid such rites because she feared the fatal risk involved.
After listening to her mother tell her that it was time, she raised objections which fell on deaf ears as she was already presented with the date and she was left with the option of either showing up, or become an outcast.
The village elders got a wind of Mabel’s rebel and rashly resorted to her being exiled from the only place she calls home.
She found herself in the city which was entirely strange, but after days of wandering the streets, she affiliated herself with fruit sellers where she hawked to makes ends meet.
She was later introduced to a business in need of a sales girl and through that pay, she could fend for herself.
Time moved swiftly and one day she ran into one of her village kinsman.
He was actually expecting a woeful tale from Mabel but to his surprise, he was greeted by two beautiful kids and a young man whom were introduced as his nephew and niece as well as Mabel’s husband.
His pride couldn’t bring him to admit their unjust did, but regret clouded his eyes.
Not many ladies will have the bravery to resist FGM. Especially in a community filled with tradition conditioned mindset individuals, but Mabel has started the campaign with her native community being the first call of action and I believe there are many more out there who have had the opportunity to escape this inhumane act.
