Are you a young African seeking creative ways to advocate for the elimination of Female Genital Mutilation?

YouthHubAfrica in partnership with the African Youth Commission with funding support from the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Program on the elimination of Female Genital Mutilation in Africa has provided a platform for young people to use the art of Storytelling to disrupt the culture of silence on FGM; the monthly Storytelling Competition.

The task for the month of July:

Write a fictional story that takes place in the future; in an Africa that has abandoned FGM. The story should be set in a  community where FGM is currently practised with the topic ‘Future Africa without FGM’

• Every month, the three best feature stories will EACH stand a chance to win cash prizes worth 100 USD.

This is not all,

• All stories that meet the criteria will be published on the www.youthendfgm.org website for an Africa-wide audience to read.

Steps to participate:

1. Click on the link on the flier to access the website
2. Create an account on https://youthendfgm.org/sign-up/ (if you have not done so already).
3. Submit your story on the blog post.
4. All stories must be submitted by Monday, 18th July 2022.

Eligibility:

• The Call is open to young Africans aged 18 – 35 years
• Acceptable Categories:            Text 
• Maximum number of words:    400
• Stories should be fictional, creative,  original and depict the reality of FGM.

NOTE: All stories must be original works of fiction as they will be subjected to a plagiarism test.

Judging:

The competition will be judged in three stages:

Stage One: Participants will submit their stories on the blogs page of the YouthendFGM website. The stories will go through an initial review and only stories that comply with our guidance will be published on the website.

Stage Two: Once the stories have been approved and published online, participants MUST share their published story on social media, to create engagements, thereby contributing to the advocacy to eliminate FGM in their networks. A minimum of 100 likes and 50 comments is required to move to stage 3.

Stage Three: Stories that successfully scale through stage 2 will be reviewed by a panel of Judges. They will consider Language, Presentation, Creativity and Relevance to the context.

• Language (grammar, vocabulary, spelling and punctuation)
• Elements (character, setting, plot, conflict and theme)
• Creativity (make the story become alive)
• Relevance to the issue/content

YouthHubAfrica, en partenariat avec la Commission africaine de la jeunesse et avec le soutien financier du programme conjoint UNFPA-UNICEF sur l’élimination des mutilations génitales féminines en Afrique, a fourni une plateforme pour les jeunes afin qu’ils utilisent l’art de la narration pour rompre la culture du silence sur les MGF ; le concours mensuel de narration.

Mission pour le mois de juillet :

Écrivez une histoire fictive qui se déroule dans le futur, dans une Afrique qui a abandonné les MGF. L’histoire doit se dérouler dans une communauté où les mutilations génitales féminines sont actuellement pratiquées et doit avoir pour thème “Une Afrique future sans mutilations génitales féminines“.

NOTE: Toutes les histoires doivent être des œuvres de fiction originales car elles seront soumises à un test de plagiat.

Jugement :

Le concours sera jugé en trois étapes : 

Première étape : Les participants soumettront leurs histoires sur la page des blogs du site web YouthendFGM. Les histoires feront l’objet d’un premier examen et seules les histoires conformes à nos directives seront publiées sur le site.

Deuxième étape : Une fois que les histoires ont été approuvées et publiées en ligne, les participants DOIVENT partager leur histoire publiée sur les médias sociaux, afin de créer des engagements, contribuant ainsi au plaidoyer pour l’élimination des MGF dans leurs réseaux. Un minimum de 100 likes et 50 commentaires est requis pour passer à l’étape 3.

Troisième étape : Les histoires qui ont franchi avec succès l’étape 2 seront examinées par un panel de juges. Ils prendront en compte la langue, la présentation, la créativité et la pertinence par rapport au contexte.

• Langue (grammaire, vocabulaire, orthographe et ponctuation)
• Éléments (personnage, cadre, intrigue, conflit et thème)
• Créativité (rendre l’histoire vivante)
• Pertinence par rapport à la question/au contenu
