“Hoyoo(mom) stop” Asli was screaming at the top of her lungs, the blade in between her legs and all this strong aunties holding her tight to the ground. She cant breath every time the blade cuts deeper Asli was loosing energy to fight back, after an hour of struggle in the hut of Hoyoo Cadey, Asli’s mom. The ladies started coming out one by one looking satisfied, as if they achieved something big. Hoyoo Cadey thanked them for there support as she offered them cinnamon tea with camel milk as it was Somali custode to give tea to anyone who drops by your house.
Hoyoo Cadey went to the hut to check on Asli, Asli was lying down lifelessly on the mat, that was covered by blood just blinking and tears rolling down painfully on her cheeks. Hoyoo Cadey ran towards Asli, but asli was breathing her last and she passed away on the spot.”Asliiii hoyoo ka kaac” Hoyoo Cadey kept telling Asli to get up, the ladies ran back in the hut after they heard the sad scream of Hoyoo Cadey just to find Asli lying down dead.
Hoyoo Cadey was not able to get over the death of her only daughter and it took her some few years to collect herself. one of the sunny days in Bosaso(a county in Somalia) Hoyoo Cadey heard a girl screaming “Hoyoo stop!” and she was taken back and remembered when Asli was screaming the same thing, she instantly ran to the house and stopped the ladies from circumcising the girl and threatened them to take them to the police, since that day till today Hoyoo Caday has been fighting FGM and tears rolled down every time she told Asli’s story to the community.

Excellent writing skills and a good worthy cause to support.
This really depicts what is going on and we need to all take up the mantle of change and fight to end FGM just as Asli’s mum. Great work Ekra
Emotion provoking piece. Thank you for sharing Ekra.
This is an amazingly written and detailed piece. We all need to play our individual roles in ensuring FGM free communities
